Caragh Duggan
 |
Originally from Portmarnock, Caragh now lives in North County Dublin with her husband and two children.
Her design qualifications include a DIT cert in Design and Display, an advanced diploma in graphics in DIT and a cert in interior design from the Regent Academy of Fine Arts in London. Along with her business partner at the time, Tracy Connaughton, Caragh established Eve Design in 1998.
In 2000, Tracy decided to branch out in another direction and she returned to college to study Architecture.
Drawing from the inspiration of early Mesolithic cave paintings, the Eve Design logo, a simple depiction of a female figure, is a symbol of the principles of design, which Caragh likes to base her work upon.
Simplicity, elegance and functionality; those are the core features of Caragh’s style.
Recent domestic projects of Caragh’s include renovation of a semi detached house in Portmarnock, interior design of a five bed detached house in Castleknock and a penthouse apartment in the Phoenix park racecourse.
In the commercial end, Caragh has renovated an office in a Georgian building in Malahide and has designed for retail outlets. She was also commissioned as designer of the showhouse in a recently launched development in her hometown of Rush.
Caragh says that she is very much a fan of contemporary design,
“I feel it gives a feeling of calmness and space. I prefer crisp and clean finishes with no clutter or fussy patterns. When it comes to colour, I tend to avoid obtrusive or loud colours and patterns, which are often used for no reason other than to say to the world ‘I’m a designer, so I can be wild.’
I personally prefer more soothing colours, such as beige, coffees, browns, as well as warm and rich colours such as reds, in order to bring warmth and depth into a room.
In saying that, I’m certainly not afraid of using bright colours, but when I do so, I do it for a reason, such as to brighten an otherwise dark room.”
In order to make a property stand out for a showhouse viewing, Caragh feels it is crucial to make the rooms in the property appear as large and as roomy as possible without too much furniture, focusing more on the placement of interesting and practical pieces and finds lighting and mirrors very important in creating the right atmosphere, with an elegant yet simple style.
Busy patterns, frills and fancy finishes are a definite dislike of Caragh’s as she feels that quite often they don’t suit most styles of building other than perhaps a period house.
However, she feels that the first rule of design is to listen to clients and what they want and likes and to strive to be a design consultant - not a design enforcer.
Caragh’s ultimate project would be to design a very modern hotel with a chic and formal structure, relishing the opportunity to create a plush interior while maintaining a stylish elegance in keeping with the contemporary aspects of the buildings architecture.
She would sum up her design style as – “Simplicity, Elegance and Functionality”.
