Nina Gonzalez Blodau

Nina's introduction to Interior design came when she worked as a specialist painter and designer for a small, complete fit out company, that provide properties with a service of dismantle, redesign and reconstruction. From this experience, Nina gained valuable hands on experience, with designing and building of furniture and lighting etc. in other words she learnt not to rely on items that were readily available but learned to design and make her own pieces. From there Nina started work as a free-lance interior designer, doing mostly domestic work.

Nina is also a fine art painter and comes from a family of artists, so along with her brother, who studied fine art, they took on commissions for murals, the biggest of which can be seen in Dromcollgher, Co. Limerick. One of the most recent commissions was for Dairmuid Galvin in the show 'I want a Garden'. Nina has also experimented with tromp doile and hand painted furniture.

Many of Nina's ideas and inspirations come from her love of travel, other ideas really just come from the love of materials and colours etc. Nina's own style has changed and will always change depending on where she is living and at what stage of life she is at. Nina could never say, for example, that she likes traditional or modern, to have style is to appreciate style in the appropriate place, like a crisp blue and white striped swedish fabric or the faded reds and yellows of a spanish family kitchen.

When designing for other people, Nina does not impose her own personal style, her approach is to help clients with their style, in a way that works for them, whether they want a chic modern look to an appartment or want to renovate a traditional georgian town house, all look great in the right situation.

Nina advises that if you are stuck for colour combinations, look at nature it never fails. one colour or fabric is only as good as what you combine it with. Nina also advise not to decorate a newly built home to fast, it's always worth taking your time to see what you like, when you live in a house you get to know how the light moves. Try to avoid mistakes such as solid colour suits, they tend to dominate and make a room uninteresting.
