Intercultural Week

As part of Intercultural and Anti-Racism Week (7th - 14th April) Fionn Davenport (Seoige & O'Shea's travel expert) opened Ireland's multi-cultured doors to spend '24 Hours in the Life' of five different cultural groups who have made their home in Ireland.

Each day Fionn reported on life with a different group, including Polish, African (Nigerian), Brazilian, Pakistani and Chinese.  Fionn spent 24 hours with each group to gain an insight into what it is like living, working, and generally being part of Irish society today and to find out how minority cultural groups manage to balance their identities and traditions, while making a large contribution to Irish society.

Intercultural Week Reports :

  • Fionn joins members of Dublin's Nigerian community in the lead up to Sunday service at the Gospel Faith Mission International Church, followed by a family get-together.

  • Fionn travels to Gort, where a third of the population is Brazilian, to meet a Brazilian family who have made Gort their home.  Fionn works in the local meat packing plant, visits the school to see how the Irish and Brazilian cultures work side by side and samples Brazilian food, hospitality and entertainment.

  • Fionn focuses on the Polish, the largest non-Irish community in Ireland.  Fionn meets members of the Polish community to find out how living in Ireland compares with life in Poland for the vast numbers of young Poles who have made Ireland their home.  Fionn also samples the best of Polish/Irish culture including food and entertainment.

  • Fionn travels to Ballyhaunis, County Mayo where the opening of a Halal meat plant has attracted so many workers from Pakistan that the town now has a local cricket team.  Fionn spends the day with a Muslim family who have settled in the West of Ireland and finds out how they have maintained their cultural identity while integrating into Irish society.

  • Fionn goes to Dublin to spend the day with the vibrant Chinese community in the capital and immerse himself in the lifestyle of a group that has successfully integrated into Irish society while maintaining a strong cultural identity and traditional values.
