1. Darwin Day
Date: Thursday, Feb 12th
Charles Darwin's work on the origin of species changed how we think about life on Earth, and is arguably one of the most revolutionary ideas of all time. This year marks his bi-centenary (born February 12th, 1809), and 150 years since the 1859 publication of 'Origin'. Events are taking place across Ireland. Mr Darwin's Big Idea: marking Darwin Day at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin, Dr Matthew Jebb will introduce Darwin's life and discoveries, achievements and insights. Plus an exhibition of Darwin's correspondence with David Moore, director of the gardens in the mid-1800s. Thursday Feb 12, 3pm. Darwin Day and the humanists: Darwin, genetics and the nature of humankind, is this year's Humanist Association Darwin day lecture, to be given by TCD geneticist, Prof David McConnell, Dublin Thursday, February 12, 7:30 p.m.

Discover how radio waves travel across the world and see how, a century before the invention of SMS texts, coded abbreviations were used to send messages quickly around the globe. Participants will have the opportunity to identify components, build a simple electronic circuit to take away and use it to send messages. Suitable for secondary school children. The sessions will take 2 hours in total and will be held between Monday 9th February and Wednesday 11th February.
