Jessica from Liberty X and her Hula Hoop

Jessica is delighted when SCOPE reunites her with her favourite toy from the past – a Hula Hoop.

“Awesome. That’s a good one actually, I didn’t have a multicoloured one,” the Liberty X singer says. “At primary school we used to have Hula Hoops. We used to use them in PE and we used to try and borrow them and run around the playground. I haven't seen one for years.”

Jessica will try out the hoop only if Danann agrees to give it a go after her, and he readily agrees. “I used to be able to do it for ages, but obviously I’ve lost the knack,” she says. However we soon realise that she still seems to have more of a knack for it than poor Danann does.

About the Hula Hoop

The Hula Hoop, a hoop that you rotate around your waist or hips, was very popular in the 1950s and again in the 1970s. An eight-year-old American, Mary Jane Freeze, set a world record in 1976.

She rotated the hoop for over ten hours non-stop. In 1987, another American, Roxann Rose, rotated the hoop for 90 hours. There are also world records for the most hoops twirling at once. In early 2006 this stood at 100 hoops.

Liberty X

Liberty X was formed in 2001 from the runners up of the UK reality TV show Popstars, who decided to form their own band to rival the competition winners. They have since become well known, with successful chart hits including Doin’ It and Just A Little.
