The Marshals get reunited with Operation

Drummer Barry Dillon and bassist James O’Brien from the band The Marshals have one gadget from the past that they really want to be reunited with – the game Operation. James got it for Christmas one year when he was younger, and he really enjoys seeing it again.

The game consists of a “patient” with lots of small parts and the player is the surgeon, who has to carefully remove different parts of the body, to earn money. If the tweezers touches the side, the patient cries (a buzzing noise) and his nose lights up.

SCOPE presenter Kathriona tells the musicians that Operation is a simple physics experiment. The metal tongs is connected to a battery and so are the metal parts in the game. When the two metal parts touch off each other, they make a circuit. This is what causes the buzzing sound – which also lights up the “patient’s” nose.

The Marshals

The Marshals were formed in a Dublin rehearsal studio in 2003 when singer Michael John placed an ad looking for band members. Their debut single was released in February 2006, when they commenced a tour of Ireland and the UK.

Barry once wanted to become a doctor – but after seeing him play the game, James thinks it’s just as well he didn’t, as he might have been really bad. The two musicians decide to bring the game on the tour bus. “It would be cool after the gig to come back and play Operation.”
