Matt from Bloc Party plays Sonic

Matt Tong, drummer from hit band Bloc Party, gets reunited with his favourite gadget, thanks to SCOPE. It's a Sega Mega Drive and Matt reminisces about the games he used to play on it.

"Sonic came with my Mega Drive, in the original package," he says. "I was really impressed with this kind of game, it was so fast and colourful. I remember never seeing anything like it before.

" It was actually playing games that led Matt into his musical career: "I remember trying to play video game tunes on my piano. I think that's how I got started in learning how to play stuff I'd heard," he says, "and then I discovered more conventional forms of popular music."

Bloc Party

Bloc Party is a four-piece indie rock band from Essex in England. Formed in 2002, it was previously called the Union. The band was signed in 2004 and has released many hit singles, toured the UK and collaborated with established artists such as The Chemical Brothers, since.

Sega Mega Drive

The Sega Mega Drive was launched in 1989. A 16-bit games machine, it came with one game. It's popularity was helped hugely by the introduction of the game Sonic The Hedgehog in 1991.

So how does Matt feel when he sees the Sega Mega Drive and compares it to the new consoles of today? "Programmers were in a way a lot more ingenious because they had less technology to fool around with," he says. "Playing some of the new fangled PlayStation II video games is akin to watching a Hollywood blockbuster. It's too easy, you have all these flashy graphics and stuff and it sort of strips away the mystique."
