Cookies

A cookie is a block of data that a web server places on a user's PC. Typically it is used to ease navigation through the site. However, it is also a useful means of the website tracking the user's path through the site, and identifying repeat visits to the site by the same user (or same user's machine). This can then help the website owner to, for instance, identify common navigation paths taken through the website or to draw a user's attention to previously unvisited content.

The Science.ie and SCOPE websites use session cookies which store information in the form of a session identification that does not personally identify you. This is used by the server to improve technical delivery of the website pages. Session cookies do not store any personal information about you and are deleted when you close your browser.

The Science.ie and SCOPE websites do not use persistent cookies (cookies that remain on your computer between visits).

If you do not want to accept cookies you can adjust your browser settings as most browsers can be set to prevent them being downloaded.

Information provided voluntarily through website forms.

Some pages of these websites allow you to subscribe to the Science.ie and other email newsletters and to enter competitions or submit enquiries and requests.

Science.ie newsletter

If you use the subscription form to subscribe to the Science.ie newsletter your email address is automatically added to the subscriber database. Alternatively, if you send an email request to subscribe to these alerts, your email address is received by a member of the Communications Department in Forfás who adds your name to the subscriber database.

Use of email addresses We will only use your email address for sending you communications for which you have specifically subscribed or requested. On occasion Forfás may also contact subscribers to advise of further developments in relation to a new series of the SCOPE television programmes. All email newsletters include details of how you can unsubscribe.

Website forms

A minimal amount of information is usually required by the website form in order to complete your subscription, request or competition entry. However, some optional fields may also appear on the form. Where you voluntarily provide additional information on the website form (such as name, address or job description) this information will either be deleted or used for statistical purposes.

Storage of subscriber lists and personal information

Subscriber lists and any personal information submitted are kept on a server belonging to and administered by Forfás or an agent of Forfás who provides the email alert software. This agent of Forfás is registered with the Data Protection Commission and has provided written confirmation to Forfás that they will comply with the relevant data protection obligations by keeping information secure and not using it for any purpose other than for which it was provided.

For backup purposes, copies of email Alert subscriber lists are stored on secure servers to which
  • A limited number of Forfás staff within the Systems Department have physical access
  • A limited number of Forfás staff within the Communications Department, Discover Science and Engineering and the Systems Department have access via the internal network

We will only use your mobile phone number for the purposes for which you provided it to us. You can unsubscribe from these mobile services at any time. Details of how to unsubscribe are provided in the same location on this website as the details of how to subscribe.
