On a beautiful autumn evening in August 1990 six friends set out in a small boat for a spot of fishing near Dalkey Island in Dublin. In the boat was Francis Murphy as well as three generations of the Fahy family, but none of the men wore life jackets. When one of the men stood up in the small boat it capsized and they all fell into the freezing water. There are strong currents near Dalkey Island, so time was quickly running out for the six men.
Local man Eamon O'Leary was also out fishing that evening and had noticed the other boat earlier on as he drifted past the island. But as he was about to take in his fishing gear and return to harbour he noticed that there was something amiss.
