Charity Lords of the Ring

Presented by Lucy Kennedy and boxing legend Barry McGuigan, this four-part week-long series follows 10 well known personalities on an emotional journey as they prepare physically and mentally for the challenge of their lives, all in the name of charity.

Ex-footballer Lee Sharpe, comedian Alan Shortt, Fair City star MacLean Burke, TV presenter John McGuire, Dragon's Den entrepreneur Sean Gallagher, journalist Joe O'Shea, former GAA star Jack Sheedy, journalist Paul Martin, RTÉ Young People's presenter Rob Ross and UK Apprentice star Ben Clarke take part in the four-part series.

Boxing is one of Ireland's most treasured and respected sports and one in which we have a long history of success from Jack Doyle and Barry McGuigan to Bernard Dunne and Katie Taylor. Irish men and women have proven time after time that they have the brains and the brawn to be champions of the ring.

The series will follow the 10 on their intensive boot-camp challenge where they will be tested to their limits by internationally renowned boxing trainers Tim Withersoon and Peter Taylor, coach and father of Katie Taylor, World Champion Women's Boxer. The pair will work with the celebs to hone their mental and physical skills so they are fighting fit and boxing clever. While other well known faces from the boxing world will be dropping into the camp to offer advice to the lads.

Over €100,000 will go directly to the 10 charities chosen by the participants, aided by Sona Vitamins sponsorship of the programme. The contestants will have an extra incentive to impress in the ring: the longer they stay in the competition, the more money their charity will receive.

The bouts will be overseen by professional referees and judged by a panel of well known guest judges from the boxing world. The judges will be awarding points after each round with the emphasis being placed on style, movement and defence along with other essential boxing skills which the contestants will have been taught during training.

Brian Peters Promotions will oversee the entire series to ensure that the standards associated with professional boxing events are adhered to throughout. The regulatory body for professional boxing in Ireland, the Boxing Union of Ireland, is also assisting in the series. All 10 celebrities will also have to pass a rigorous half-day medical before being allowed to take part in the boot-camp and protective headgear will be worn for all ring training and bouts.
