Last week on 'Diarmuid's Pony Kids', Diarmuid, Jessica, and Ronan held open horse trials in Fettercairn Youth Horse Project. After a gruelling day and much deliberation they picked five kids to begin 10 weeks of intensive showjumping training which will culminate in a tournament in the RDS horse show. The five chosen kids were; Dean 'Squeeky' Dwyer, Daryl Hogan, Jade Mooney, Thomas Keenan and Dean Comerford.
But when the dust has settled and training begins, Diarmuid finds himself asking the question 'Can raw natural talent really be trained to show jump worthy of the RDS Horseshow in 10 weeks?
This week, before beginning their training, the kids take a trip to a Grand Prix event in Mullingar Equestrian Centre to have a look at the level of jumping they will be aiming to achieve. They also take a trip to 'RACE' at the Curragh and they ditch their hoodies and trainers for jodphurs, riding jackets and chaps.
Jessica flies in from Dusseldorf for the first day of training and it isn't long before both Jessica and Ronan realise this is going to be much more difficult then first anticipated. Quite apart from the standard of riding, the Pony Kids are proving to be a handful and it becomes glaringly apparent that disipline is going to be a major issue. One thing is for sure, some drastic action and maybe even some outside help is needed to turn things around...
