Web Chat with Bell X1

On Thursday 9 March 2006, the day after Bell X1's appearance on Programme 7 of 'Other Voices', guitarist Dave Geraghty was online for a webchat.

This is what he said.

Johnny M:Would Bell X1 ever do a full movie soundtrack?
Dave: It's something that we're all really interested in doing. Paul and Brian have created some soundscapes for a play that is on in Dublin's Liberty Hall Theatre from 14 to 18 March. It's called 'This Ebony Bird'. Well worth a look - and a listen.

Bongo: Any chance of seeing you or Paul drumming again anytime soon?
Dave: Did you not hear about the Bell X1 drum clinic? Only joking!

Conor: Can it be frustrating at a gig like the RDS to have everyone recognise 'Rocky Took a Lover' but not 'Slowset'?
Dave: It's kind of amusing. It's good to see that our new music is appealing to a whole new set of fans who will hopefully go and give those babies their scholarships.

Martina: Have you thought about doing a benefit gig in aid of buying Paul a new suit sometime?
Dave: That's what all the gigs are! He gets through two suits a gig. He wears two suits on stage and the outer one is just dissolved by the end of the set.

Conor: Whay cover would you must like to do at a gig?
Dave: Johnny Cash's 'When the Man Comes Around' with Dom singing and Paul, Brian and I doing backing vocals.

Ruth: Hi, the difference between Juniper and Bell X1 is amazing. do you feel more creatively free now than you did a few years ago?
Dave: Yes, I do. I think we have hit upon a very healthy creative process with the four of us.

Sean O'Sullivan: Do you think it'll be possible for Bell X1 to play tiny venues in Ireland anymore, without resorting to calling yourselves The Australian Bell X1?
Dave: There are always pseudonyms when we're craving that playing-on-the-spectator's-lap intimate gig.

Una: What was the worst gig you ever played?
Dave: No offence to Limerick, but we played the first night of Tour de Flock in Limerick University. It was pretty nervewracking for that reason and the gremlins were out that night too. Good days, bad days.

Ian: Whats the Bell X1 song you're most proud of?
Dave: I think 'Reach Around' for its straight to the point music and lyrics.

lily: Hello Dave! What bands will you be watching at Oxegen?!
Dave: Sigur Ros - they better be playing in a dark tent. I want to check out the Arctic Monkeys to see what all the fuss is about. The Who??

Ray: Hi Dave, how do you decide which songs you sing on the album? Is it just the ones that suit your voice? Or just the ones you wrote?
Dave: The ones that originate with me, I suppose.

Shell: Dave, what got you first interested in music and is it your biggest passion?
Dave: My parents played in a band together and there were instruments around the house. There was a bass guitar under the bed in the spare room and it was out of bounds. And I think the fact that the guitar was off limits made me want to play it. My mother used to record Larry Gogan's Golden Hour for me so I heard the cream of the crop.

Maud Gonne: As you are on Island Records, U2's label, have you had any communications with them about your music?
Dave: No we haven't. The closest we got to U2 was Paul and I and my sister sitting beside The Edge at Justin Timberlake.

Diarmaid: Hey Dave, so what lies in store for Bell X1 in the near future with the release of 'Flame' and 'Flock' in the UK? Global domination and a tour of the US?
Dave: Who knows, hopefully! We really enjoyed our weeklong tour in New York and LA. Any excuse to get back!

Darren: What was your favourite gig off the Tour de Flock?
Dave: Cork was amazing. Dublin was great, obviously because it's a home gig. Personally, Sligo on the last night of the tour - partytastic.

sara jane: Why did you decide to play the UCD Ball instead of the Trinity Ball since a few of you went there?
Dave: Trinity wouldn't give us any scarves! I've only ever been to the Trinity Ball and some of the sights have scarred me. Not to say it'll be any better in UCD!

Dawn: Dave, how is your work with The Rotators coming on?
Dave: It hasn't advanced because not all of The Rotators have been available to do anything in Bell X1 downtime. But I do believe I'm close to completion on a solo album. Hopefully The Rotators will get it together.

Mully: Is admitting on the Internet that you were at a Justin concert the most embarrassing thing you've done...
Dave: Great gig. I've far more embarrassing things that I'm not going to talk about.

Kiera Brennan: If you were kicked out of the band, who would you like to replace you?
Dave: That's a good question. Somebody crap so that I'd be asked back! Or that's maybe why I've been kicked out!

Eddie: Hello Dave. Thanks for the great music. I live in Dresden, Germany. Any touring planned over this way in the future? Eddie Casey
Dave: We don't have any plans to go to mainland Europe, still hoping for tour supports - maybe David Hasselhoff might take us under his wing. We'd love to get out there.

Fergal: Do you read the Bell X1 message board?
Dave: I do. Sometimes I wonder what the hell people are talking about, but it's very entertaining. It's kind of like the fans' stage and we're doing lights and sound.

Sean O'Sullivan: Are there any of the earlier songs in the band's history that you'd like to work into rotation in the live set or do you feel that playing is a kind of process that just has to move forward?
Dave: Sometimes there are songs that don't work when they're first written - how to dress them up is not always obvious. But listening to old demos sometimes the potential is realised, after having not listened to it in a while.

will ryan: What new young bands on the Irish scene are you listening to or have heard good things about?
Dave: The band The Immediate who were on 'Other Voices' last night with us. I'm a fan of Ross Breen, awaiting his debut release and watch out for Tadhg Cooke's second album, hopefully this year.

johnnym: Were you guys listening to PJ Harvey when making 'Flock'? there are a number of tracks which sound suspiciously like songs from 'Stories from the Sea'.
Dave: Yes, we were. We've pretty much always been fans of Polly Jean. It's the first time on any of our albums that we have worn such influences on our sleeve.

NoNameClubRefugee: Love 'Flock' - but who decided against 'Monkey 61'?
Dave: It was kind of voted out by the majority. Sorry if it was one of your favourites.

Paul: Now that you guys have played the RDS and you've experienced both, which do you prefer: a small venue where you're closer to the audience or the bigger venue with more people?
Dave: I think it can depend on mood. Being at both ends of the spectrum one is a welcome break from the other. But in general I prefer more intimate gigs.

David Hogan: Did you ever get frustrated that the band's first two albums were not received by the public as well as they might have deserved?
Dave: Yes. It's kind of like the children that didn't get the scholarship. They are all our babies, after all.

David Hogan: Hi Dave, Congratulations on the success of 'Flock'!! Any touring plans for the near future?
Dave: There's no tour in Ireland booked as of yet, but we're doing the UK and some instores up North, in Belfast and Derry.

Tom Doyle: If you don't hit the bigtime in the UK and stuff will it trouble the band much?
Dave: I think all the band ever wanted was to always turn ourselves and each on creatively. And as long as we are in a position financially to continue doing that yachts and mansions are not high on our priority list.

Tom Doyle: As a Wexford man myself, why did you choose to do your albums down there?
Dave: The Wexford ladies!

Mikey: Hi Dave!! Nice to have a chance to ask a question. Why did you pick the name 'Flock' for your album, and what does it refer to exactly?! Best of luck and success. Mike
Dave: The title is do with the album subject matter being more extroverted as opposed to introverted, which is what 'Music in Mouth' is. It's more of a social commentary, although the exact meaning was never discussed amongst the band after Paul suggested the title. For me, it conjures up images of people's desire to belong to a clique or to have a sense of belonging in society. Sheep...

John Murray: I missed your recent gig in the RDS. I heard it was great show, well done. When will you playing in Dublin again?
Dave: Hi John, there's talk of us doing something towards the end of the year. Watch this space. Looking forward to playing again.

dee: When's the live album coming Dave?
Dave: We have recorded some gigs. But rather than a live album we are hoping to record a live DVD. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to write in for this webchat. Will hopefully see you soon for that live DVD shoot or else at some of the UK gigs or later on in the year for an Irish gig. Thanks again, Dave.
