If you're one of those serious music fans who carries around a mental list of undiscovered treasures that other like-minded souls really need to hear, then David Geraghty's 'Kill Your Darlings' should figure near the top. Best-known as the guitarist in Bell X1, Geraghty revealed an even greater depth to his talents when his solo debut was released in the autumn of 2007. While his first single 'Fear the Hitcher' suggested a special album was on the way, 'Kill Your Darlings' far exceed expectations.
A guitar player from a very young age, two of Geraghty's defining music moments were seeing the Flying Pickets in Dublin's National Stadium at the age of 10 in 1985 and then attending David Bowie's 1987 Slane show. Throughout his secondary school years he was in many bands and by the age of 18 had joined Damien Rice, Paul Noonan, Brian Crosby and Dominic Phillips in their band Juniper. Tipped as the next big Irish act, Juniper were consigned to history when Rice left - but Geraghty, Crosby, Noonan and Phillips then formed Bell X1.
Bell X1 have since gone on to become one of Ireland's biggest bands, releasing bestselling albums - 'Neither Am I', 'Music in Mouth' and 'Flock' - but still waiting for that major international breakthrough their music so richly deserves. And those plaudits are something that Geraghty as a solo artist should have bestowed on him also. The Choice Music Prize-nominated 'Kill Your Darlings' has announced the arrival of a very special singer-songwriter and it will be fascinating to see how this new career evolves - and whether he'll come more centrestage with Bell X1 too.
