Elbow
In September 2005 Elbow returned with 'Leaders of the Free World'. Arguably their best album to date, it finds Garvey & Co creating some of their most poignant songs and rewarding listeners' patience in spades. It's worth buying for the penultimate track 'Great Expectations' alone, but every song on 'Leaders of the Free World' has some type of magic to work. Another Mercury nomination is called for.

Duke Special
Singer-songwriter Peter Wilson, aka Duke Special, grew up in Belfast. Music was an activity from an early age, getting piano lessons in his grandmother's home, and singing traditional Irish songs in churches and community centres with his three, also musically-inclined, older sisters. As he grew older he performed in various rock bands with little success before he found his musical feet three years ago - and with it his unique onstage persona, a blend of vaudeville and music hall.

Stephen Fretwell
Fretwell signed to Fiction Records to release his first full-length album, 'Magpie', in 2005. He produced 'Magpie' himself, recording it at the legendary Abbey Road studios, and his gentle, tender, heart-rending folk-tinged songs have been exciting critics into making comparisons with Bob Dylan and Nick Drake. With a large fan base that continues to grow through strong word of mouth and positive reviews, Stephen Fretwell is no longer Manchester's best kept secret.
Claire Sproule
Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Claire Sproule has made a big hit with her eponymous debut. The Derry-born 21-year-old was brought up on the music of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello. When she first expressed an interest in playing guitar, her guitarist father sat her down and made her listen to Joni Mitchell. That only encouraged her. Mastering just two chords at the age of 14, she immediately started writing songs.
