Oileán: Bere Islan
The 'Oilean' team travelled to Bere Island in West Cork this year to meet some of the islanders that make this beautiful place so quirky.
Meet Jimmy Walsh the burly gentleman farmer whose foray into amateur drama singles him out as a talent discovered in the December of life. Cyril and Catherine Murphy married in the 60s and left the island to work in London and Cork city. But their love of nature takes them back to the home place to indulge their passion for horticulture and 'The Good Life'. John O'Sullivan remembers the heyday of the British Army when one could hear the rousing tune 'Kevin Barry' being belted out from 'The British Legion Club' by locals enjoying the subsidised booze.
This is a trip around Bere Island full of good humour and nostalgia that calls to mind the innocence and playfulness of a bygone day.
