Programme 8
Meet Dara and Ray Keegan who were young free and blissfully not so single, living happily in their new home in Lucan. Life changed two years ago when two became four and twins Sophie and Rachel came along. Life became a whirl of commuting, crèche runs, and child-rearing..and finding time for themselves is just wishful thinking.
Monday to Friday the Keegan family run a tight ship, up at 5.50am to prepare for the day ahead, waking and dressing the twins, and then into the car to join the traffic line of commuters with a brief stop off at the crèche, and then onto a full day in the office. Dara finishes up in the office at 4pm, and begins the arduous commute to pick up the girls and then home. Sophie and Rachel are fed, bathed and in bed by 7.15pm, by which time Ray and Dara barely have the energy to muster up a conversation.
All changes at the weekend. The pace slows right down; Dara and Ray devote nearly all their time to the twins and with naptime dictating the day, the family find themselves house bound for the weekend.
Even over the weekend nap time, the time deprived couple don't get an opportunity to catch up with each other; instead it's spent over a bottle of bleach, the hoover and a mop bucket.
Hobbies have gone out the window since the arrival of the twins, with both Ray and Dara feeling guilty if they were to abandon the routine at any time.
Time management expert and psychologist Owen Fitzpatrick steps in show that there are other, less indoors, routines to follow, and to remind Dara and Ray to prioritise their time together as well as with the girls. But can Owen convince them of the new alternative ways, and can they abandon the dictatorial afternoon nap?
Over the last 8 weeks we've shown how hectic our lifestyles have become. But we've also shown that life needn't be a race against the clock. You don't need to feel paralysed by all you have to do. Prioritise how you spend your time, recognise your true goals, take away those obstacles and you can create a schedule that works for you. Time doesn't have to your enemy. With time on your side, you'll never again feel there are just not enough hours.
