Gursharan Singh is from Karnal in the Haryana district of Northern India. He came here to pursue his education and studied at the American College on Merrion Square and now works as a hotel manager.

He is married to Mitu from West Delhi who came here at 16 to sit the Leaving Cert and has been in Ireland ever since.

Much of Gusharan and Mitu's social life revolves around the Sikh Temple on Serpentine Avenue in Ballsbridge, where Mitu teaches Punjabi to the kids. They even met for the first time at the Temple !

Gursharan comes from a farming background and his family still live on a large arable farm in Karnal, just north of Delhi.

Music and education factor highly in importance for Gursharan's family. His sister is studying for a Masters in Music and Gusheran plays the Tabla, which is a type of drum typical to Northern India.

Gursharan and Mitu have settled in Ireland and live in Lucan.

India's economy includes traditional village farming, modern agriculture, and handicrafts. It is also a major exporter of software services, financial services and software workers. Although India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, the huge population means that there is a relatively low per capita income.
