How would you feel about novice gardeners let loose in your garden?
This week three candidates with artistic flair and a green conscience get to do just that, as they compete for a six-month work placement with renowned landscape designer, Diarmuid Gavin. He is one of the most innovative designers in his field and will be looking for ingenuity, creativity and a passion for outdoor space in the candidates. Does he find it?
Week one sees the wannabes design a roof garden for a contemporary loft apartment, which is part of a new cutting edge development near Manchester. Following a trip to visit a penthouse rooftop gardens, one of which has been designed by Diarmuid, they then return to his office in London’s Notting Hill. The candidates have less than a week to design, pitch and present their ideas for a contemporary rooftop garden to the client. They have to express their ideas clearly and help the client, as well as Diarmuid, to visualize their ideas. How will they cope under pressure?
The next week arrives and the candidates have been trimmed down to two before they face their toughest challenge yet; to design not one, but two, gardens. The first is a tiered garden and the second is a walled space for a luxury hotel Kilronan Castle, which is on the border of Leitrim and Roscommon. They need to be able to work as part of a team and demonstrate a good blend of creativity and practicality in their designs as part of the hotel renovation.
Tune in to see if the candidates’ designs and vision meet Diarmuid’s high standards or will he think twice about hiring either of them?
