Sraith Ceithre Pháirt Do RTÉ

In 2007, is daoine a rugadh taobh amuigh den tír 10% de dhaonra na hÉireann. Níl aon nuaíocht ag baint leis sin. Go deimhin, anuas tríd an stair ba mhinic “ionróirí” coimhthíocha ag triall ar Éirinn – na Ceiltigh, na Lochlannaigh agus na Normannaigh ina measc. D’fhan go leor acu seo agus d’éirigh “níos Gaelaí ná na Gaeil iad féin”.

Ag féachaint timpeall ar an daonra seo atá tar éis athrú go mór, cuireann an láithreoir Bob Kelly ceist cé acu a bhfuil aon cheann de na nithe a bhí mar dhlúthchuid dár gcarachtar náisiúnta tábhachtach a thuilleadh agus cinneann sé ar thabhairt faoi thurgnamh spéisiúil féiniúlachta. Is éard a dhéanann sé ná cuireadh a thabhairt do cheathrar eachtrannach nach bhfuil i bhfad in Éirinn bheith níos Gaelaí ná na Gaeil iad féin!

Is sraith ceithre chlár é “Níos Gaelaí …” a dhéanfaidh iniúchadh, thar tréimhse seachtaine, ar fhéiniúlacht na hÉireann. Craolfar é ar RTÉ a hAon sa tseachtain roimh Lá Fhéile Pádraig, chun go mbeidh sé ar comhthráth le Seachtain na Gaeilge.

An chéad dúshlán, agus an ceann is mó atá tugtha do na rannpháirtithe, ná máistreacht a fháil ar an nGaeilge agus tá teagascóir pearsanta curtha ar fáil dóibh le hiad a threorú trí dhianchúrsa 10 seachtaine.

Lena chois sin, tá “topaic speisialta” tugtha do gach duine acu agus tá an dúshlán tugtha dóibh iniúchadh grinn a dhéanamh le teacht ar níos mó eolais faoi thréithe mhuintir na hÉireann.

Le cabhair ó shaineolaithe mar thráchtaire na gcluichí Gaelacha Micheál O Muircheartaigh, an ceoltóir John Spillane agus an rinceoir as Riverdance Dearbhla Lennon, déanfaidh na rannpháirtithe seo iad féin a thumadh i saol bia agus dí, ceoil, damhsa agus spóirt na hÉireann.

Sa chlár deireanach, tiocfaidh na rannpháirithe iltíreacha seo le chéile den chéad uair le bheith páirteach i dTóraíocht Chiste féiniúlachta in iarthar na hÉireann.

Trí bhreathnú orainn féin as an nua trí shúile eachtrannacha, tá súil ag Bob Kelly roinnt ceisteanna suimiúla a ardú – agus siamsaíocht a chur ar fail leis.

A Four Part Series for RTÉ One

In 2007, 10% of the Irish population is non-Irish national.  In the grand scheme of things, this is nothing new. Indeed, throughout history this island has always had foreign “invaders” – including the Celts, the Vikings and the Normans.   Indeed, many stayed to become “more Irish than the Irish”.

Looking around at this enormously changed population, presenter Bob Kelly wonders whether any of the reference points for our national character are relevant any more and he decides to conduct a unique identity experiment. In short, Bob invites four recently arrived foreign nationals to become more Irish than the Irish!

“Níos Gaelaí … “ is a four part series that will explore and challenge Ireland’s identity over the course of a single week.  It will be broadcast on RTE ONE in the week leading up to St Patrick’s Day - to coincide with the annual Seachtain na Gaeilge.

First and foremost, four volunteers are being challenged to master the Irish language and they have been partnered with a personal tutor for an intensive 10-week crash course.

Secondly, each of our participants have been assigned a “special topic” that they will be challenged to further probe in search of insights into what makes the Irish people tick.

With the help of experts like GAA commentator Micheál O Muircheartaigh, musician John Spillane and Riverdancer Dearbhla Lennon, our volunteers will immerse themselves in the worlds of Irish food and drink, music and dance and sport.

In the final programme, our cosmopolitan participants will meet together for the first time to compete in an Identity Treasure Hunt in the West of Ireland.

By taking a fresh look at ourselves through the eyes of strangers, Bob Kelly hopes to raise some intriguing questions – and to entertain en route.
