Show 8 - Van Drumpt Family, Killaloe, Co Clare
Leonie and Mark have been living in their home in Killaloe for 8 years. The interior of the house is designed to their specific taste and they have just finished completing an extension with two sliding french doors into the garden. The next task is the garden – they always joked that if they won the lotto the first thing they would do is hire the “fabulous Diarmuid’.
Mark, originally from Holland, is a sports physiotherapist with the Limerick Gaelic Football team and Garryowen Rugby Club. Leonie originally from Tralee works partime making architertural models. Their daughter Paris is a year and a half old.
A very design-conscious couple, they admire the quirker and more unique designs that Diarmuid has created in the past.
Their vision was to to “bring the house outside and the garden inside – so it is very much part of the house” . They set Diarmuid a budget of €20,000.
Diarmuids Initial Reaction
Diarmuid like the garden he ‘thought it was very distinctive with interesting landscape”. Immediately he was “inspired by the space and wanted to create an outdoor living room”. He suggested a concave structure “using very sleek, high quality simple lines…..but leaving a massive section off the roof” – in order to utilise sunlight. A steel structure was erected of which the external and internal walls were clad with cedarwood. The foucs of which was a bight pink mural wall that caught the eye. Diarmuid commented that “a garden is designed to be seen from a distance and to be enhanced from a distance”. The garden was filled with architectural planting, warm high grasses and also colourful pink hydrangeas completed this unique garden that ultimately is “one big idea in a relatively small space”.
