Series 3: Programme 5

Paul and Mary Nolan

Watch Programme 5 here...

This show features husband and wife Paul Nolan and Mary King-Nolan. Paul and Mary's health contrasts sharply with that of their daughters who are international gymnasts. Paul and Mary take very little exercise and life revolves around work and ferrying the children from event to event. They realise they are both out of condition and if they're going to improve their life expectancy then they have to make big lifestyle improvements. But are they ready to change?

Results after first medical and fitness tests:

Paul
BMI 31 (Obese)

Cholesterol 7.9 mmol/l
Healthy level below 5

Blood pressure 160/90
Healthy level < 140/80

LIFE EXPECTANCY 68

Mary
BMI 36 (Obese)

Cholesterol 7.3 mmol/l
Healthy level below 5

Blood pressure 150/90
Healthy level < 140/80

LIFE EXPECTANCY 74

Mary was also diagnosed with gallstones - a clear indication that her lifestyle isn't working. If a gallstone moved Mary would be in a lot of pain and need immediate surgery.

Paul and Mary both have a cholesterol reading over 7 - it should be below 5. This is worrying, especially in combination with their high blood pressure. And obesity will be increasing their risk of many diseases, including cancer.

8 Week Plan

  • 3 healthy meals a day
  • Cut out snacking in front of the TV in the evening
  • Start getting active for at least 30 minutes a day 5 days a week.

If Paul can fit in a brisk 15-minute walk to and from work he will already be achieving the activity goals of the plan without any major effort.

We asked business coach An Coppens to help Paul and Mary set definite goals that they could achieve within a specific time frame, in this case 6 months. She instructed them to break this time period into bite-sized pieces, to set clear targets and list exactly what needs to be done day-by-day.

Mary - Cholesterol 6.7 (previously 7.3)

Paul - Cholesterol 6.7 (previously 7.9)

Mary - Blood Pressure 140/85 (previously 150/90)

Paul - Blood Pressure 165/90 (previously 160/90)

Mary - BMI 35 (previously 36)

Paul - BMI 30 (previously 31)

LIFE EXPECTANCIES BOTH 81
