Series 3: Programme 3
35 year old Thywill Bankole is originally from Nigeria but now lives in Balbriggan. He's an accountant and also pastor in charge of his local church. Looking after his congregation and young family is leaving him out of condition and his medical and fitness results confirm that he needs to take action to improve his health. But can Thywill find the time to make a difference to his life expectancy?
Thywill came to Ireland 9 years ago and since he came here he's been piling on the weight. He's so fed up with bad eating habits and weight he's even started preaching about it! The problem is that being a pastor, a full-time accountant and father to three children leaves Thywill little time or energy to concentrate on his health.
Bad diet and no time for exercise is a common complaint for the Irish population but if Thywill doesn't try to sort this out now then he's likely to be heading for serious health problems in the future.
Results after first medical and fitness tests:
Healthy Level 0.34-2.18
Healthy Level 3.85 - 6.1
High triglycerides can lead to strokes and heart disease and with a fasting blood sugar of 6.9 diabetes is a real possibility.
BMI 33 (Obese)
Healthy BMI 19 - 25
At 5ft8' and weighing over 14 and a half stone means Thywill is at greater risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke
Lung Age 65
Thywill doesn't smoke but his weight is restricting his lungs giving him a lung age 30 years older than he actually is.
LIFE EXPECTANCY 76
Thywill might live to 76 but with strokes and diabetes a real possibility he needs to think about the quality of his life.
8 Week Plan
- Three regular meals a day
- Cut down on high energy meals and late night snacking
- Increase activity to 30 minutes a day 5 times a week
Dr Mark wants Thywill to take a serious look at his diet and his erratic eating habits. He also wants him to make time for daily exercise. Over half of Irish men don't do enough activity and finding just 30 minutes a day to get active still seems to be a major struggle for Thywill. But exercise is really important. It will help him lose weight, it will strengthen his heart and it will also release endorphins, which will help him relax.
