Series 3: Programme 2

Irene Winters

Watch Programme 2 here...

Presented by Dr Mark Hamilton. Tonight's programme features Irene Winters, a busy self-employed travel agent, town councillor and part-time student from Wicklow Town. Her schedule leaves her with little time to look after herself and she feels constantly stressed. She knows her lifestyle is knocking years off her life and she's prepared to make huge changes. Can Dr Mark help her find ways to relax, stop smoking and extend her life expectancy?

Irene spends 6 days a week running a thriving travel agency, another minimum of 16 hours a week as a Wicklow town councillor, has to attend meetings as a Rotarian and toastmaster and spends another couple of evenings a week as a business studies student. It's all likely to take a toll on her health and the situation is worsened by the fact that she finds smoking helps her cope with her hectic lifestyle.

With over 30 years of cigarettes under her belt it's going to be a hard addiction to beat. Over 50 percent of Irish women still smoke and smoking-related diseases kill over 6,000 people a year in Ireland.

Results after first medical and fitness tests:

Blood Pressure
135/80
Healthy Level < 140/80
For her age Irene's blood pressure is good, but smoking combined with a stressful lifestyle is likely to force this up.

VO2 max
27.5 ml/kg/min
Healthy Level 40-60
A VO2 max of 27.5 means Irene is unfit.

BMI 31.6 (Obese)
Healthy BMI 19 - 25
12% of Irish women are obese and as an obese smoker Irene is putting herself at even more risk of poor health.

LIFE EXPECTANCY 64
The average expectancy for an Irish woman is 81. If Irene wants to get back some of those 17 years she's missing out on then she has turn her lifestyle around.
