Series 3: Programme 10

Dave McCarthy

Watch Programme 10 here...

This programme features Dave McCarthy a chef from Ennis, Co. Clare. 35 year old Dave constantly snacks and is a yo-yo dieter. He exercises erratically and finds it hard to stay motivated. However, his medical and fitness test results inspire him to take his health seriously and he embarks on a rigorous overhaul of his lifestyle. Dr Mark encourages him to try new sports such as kite surfing and Nordic Walking and Dave also gets advice from a sports science lecturer about keeping fit and focussed.

Results after first medical and fitness tests:

BMI 33.4 (Obese)
Healthy BMI 19 - 25

Cholesterol 5.9 mmol/l
Healthy Level below 5

Blood Pressure 160/90
Healthy Level < 140/80

LIFE EXPECTANCY 73

Dave is 18 and a half stones and even at 6ft 2 this means he joins the one in seven Irish men who are obese - a figure that's rising by 1% a year. Obesity is one of the largest causes of preventable death in Ireland. Dave is only 35 but already he's putting himself at risk of diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

Dave's snacking sometimes adds up to 2300 calories a night, he shouldn't be eating much more than this in a whole day. Nearly half the Irish population are overweight, often due similar lifestyles.

8 Week Plan

  • eat three healthy meals a day
  • reduce snacking and picking at food
  • 30 minutes moderate exercise a day, 5 times a week

Dr Mark recommends that Dave meets nutritionist Margot Brennan. She explains that portion control is very important and that even healthy food can make you put on weight if you eat too much. Because of Dave's height and exercise regime Margot is recommending he eat nine portions of carbohydrates a day, though most people should aim for six portions.

Dave throws himself into the exercise side of the plan with vigour; taking up martial art Taekwon-Do, experiencing the thrill of kitesurfing and the more sedate Nordic Walking. Dr Mark is hoping Nordic Walking will encourage Dave to enjoy a sport that's less intense but has many fitness advantages.

30 minutes moderate activity a day is enough to see health benefits but Dave is exercising vigorously every day for over an hour. Dr Mark worries that if he keeps on like this he could once again lose interest, burn himself out or get injured. So he sends him to meet sports scientist Dr Cian O'Neill who recommends a safe, sustainable exercise programme and explains the dangers of exercising too vigorously.
