Last in Series
The third and last programme in this series of Flesh and Blood is a guided tour by writer Carlo Gebler of his father Ernest with contributions by Carlo's mother Edna O'Brien, playwright JP Donleavy and writer Alana Hopkin.
The bulk of the tour is an exploration of the contents of a pile of old suitcases placed on the dining table at Carlo's home in Co Fermanagh.
His inheritance from his father, the suitcases lay in Carlo's attic for years. Carlo had an instinct about the contents and knew that until he was truly 'ready' he should not open them.
The film is an examination of the relationship between a father and son as revealed by the contents of those suitcases.
Carlo's dad was a writer, a hoarder and an habitual annotator. The scribbled notes found on the inside surfaces of the cases and across the vast collection of photographs and documents form a commentary on Gebler family life; events such as the publication of Ernest's best-selling book, the arrival and departure of Ernest's first wife American actress/heiress Leatrice Gilbert and the arrival and departure of Carlo's mother Edna O'Brien.
