Jo has had an affair with Tommy and has even tried to make a personal profit from donations to the Helping Hand. With Dermot's finances forcing her to bend the rules and her affair threatening to become public, can this veneer of integrity really survive?
We put some of your questions to Rachel Sarah Murphy:
How did you first get the part on Fair City?
I auditioned for Shelley, didn't get it and then a year later Niall Mathews (the then executive producer) called me for an interview about the character Jo. He offered me the part there and then and needless to say l took it.
When the Tommy Dillon affair was first put to you as a story for your character, did you have any reservations about it?
I was mortified. All l could think of was my poor granny and mother having to watch me snog someone. Also, l barely knew Geoff who plays Tommy at that stage so it was all a bit embarrassing to begin with.
Was it awkward to film the romantic scenes with Tommy?
No not at all. Geoff put me totally at ease and l wanted this story to be good and exciting for the women and men of Ireland so l really went for it in those scenes.
Do you think Dermot's a bit stupid not to be suspicious of Tommy and Jo or is he just too trusting?
Just too trusting. He loves his wife and believes they're a team, which he should believe. Unfortunately he took his eye off the ball on the romantic and physical side. Just because Jo is a mum and wife doesn't mean a night of passion is out of the realms of reality. Right ladies?
Will Dermot ever find out and if he does, do you think the marriage will survive?
If he finds out, no l don't think the marriage will ever recover fully at least.
What do you think attracted Jo to Tommy?
Sex and admiration.
What other story lines would you like to happen to Jo?
I'd like to see Jo getting even feistier and more into business.
What do your family and friends think about Jo Fahey?
They love her as does the public. She's not perfect, none of us are. She's not a supermodel, few of us are. She is a super mum though, which a lot us try our best to be, and she goes through all the insecurities that role brings with it.
What are Jo's best and worst qualities?
Her best qualities are that she's feisty and independent. The worst is her nagging.
Who is your favourite character in Fair City?
Dermot, I love him!!!!!
What other actors in Fair City do you enjoy working with the most?
Clelia (aka Niamh) is hysterical to work with, never a dull moment ; Alan Devine (aka Louie); and then Charlie. I love working with Tom Jordan.
Is there any character in Fair City that you wish you had more scenes with?
Charlie & Louie
What other acting jobs have you done before Fair City?
Lots of theatre i.e. Shakespeare and the classics, IMX movie and commercials. I'm still awaiting Liam Neeson's invitation to star opposite him in a romantic lead capacity.
Do you have any tips for aspiring actors?
Go to the Irish Film Academy in Cork or Dublin - l hear it's fantastic for acting for camera training. (nice plug there Rachel Sarah! - Ed)
What's the most enjoyable thing about being in Fair City?
Working with people l love, i.e. crew, office, props, make up, wardrobe and the cast.
Thanks for all your questions.
