A Day in the Life of....

RTÉ Television Floor Manager - Kim Burrowes

I have been with RTÉ for 17 years, and have been a Floor Manager for 9 of those. A day on Fair City starts at 8am, checking if there are any changes to script and story and that cast and crew are all present and accounted for.

As floor manager you are the centrepiece of the studio operation and control the mood of the floor, in particular you are responsible for strict discipline in what otherwise could be disorganised chaos. You work as a mouthpiece for the Director who observes the recordings from a control room, separated geographically from the studio floor. All manner of instruction must be relayed tactfully to artists and crew; for example performers position for camera, voice levels, etc..

As well as being the key communicator you must anticipate what is to come during the day as to ensure the smooth running of studio production. Nervous performers are often thankful to the soothing assistance that the floor manager offers.

Being a Floor Manager, what is your favourite type of flooring; wood, carpet or tile? Wood. Easy to clean and warm.

What's the funniest thing you've heard back through talkback? Ah! What goes in one ear, stays in there.

Do you ever have to discipline the cast? Yes, and it is always done quietly and discreetly.

Whose floor would you most like to manage? Salma Hayek.
