John Heney

Name: John Heney
Idea: Drive through Fence
Investment: ¤40,000
Equity: 25%
Location: Kilfeacle, Tipperary, Co Tipperary

The Pitch:"Develop a stock-proof drive-through gate, which would allow a farmer drive quickly around his/her farm"

How did you come up with the idea: A farmer friend of mine on seeing a drive-through quad which I had developed for use on my own farm, enquired if I could develop a drive through gate suitable for a jeep and tractor for use on his farm. When I had developed a prototype that I was happy with, I erected four on his farm. I erected a similar number on my own farm for testing and another one on a third farm. I was greatly encouraged by the success of the gates on my own farm and the very positive feedback I received from the other two farmers.

Personal Information: I am married to Margaret and we have four children grown up children. On leaving secondary school I returned to the family farm. I run a successful grass based store to beef enterprise and I also write a monthly column for the Irish Independent's Farming Supplement on the trials and tribulations of beef farming. I returned to education in 1999 and I hold a Certificate in Advertising and Public Relations, a BA in Sustainable Rural Development and an MA in International Studies. My currently hobbies are windsurfing, cycling, tennis and photography.

Tony Kelly

Name: Tony Kelly
Idea: Vapper Dryer
Investment: ¤30,000
Equity: 15%
Location: Dublin

The Pitch: A fast, efficient, portable, single item clothes dryer. Costing less than any other product on the market.

How you came up with Idea: I have 3 boys. One wet Monday morning none of their school jumpers were dry. The labels had a "Do Not Tumble Dry" warning. We had 15 minutes before they left for school. I tried a hair dryer, it was having little effect, but it took too long. So my kids went to school that morning with damp jumpers. I realised then there was no fast way to dry clothes. Even the best tumble dryers need too much time and use too much energy.

Personal Information: "My background is in Electronic Engineering. I've owned and run several businesses in Holland and Ireland. My list of achievements is extensive. I have been granted several patents over the years."

"My philosophy is that creativity is a natural process. Everyone is creative. Some of the best ideas come from the most unlikely and unexpected sources. You can never predict where, when or from whom the next idea will come. You have to be prepared to listen"
