Designs for Life continues this week with a young couple who have ambitious plans and a limited budget.
Presenter and architect Gary Miley introduces us to Sinead Whelan and her partner Gavin Carr who were in the enviable position of being given a site in a stunning part of Co. Wexford. However their move to the country was part of a greater plan for a simpler life which meant not saddling themselves with a huge mortgage and they wanted to keep their budget to fixed limit of €250,000.
But they also had ambitions for their first house together - they wanted something a little special that would do justice to their stunning site.
Gary matches the couple with architect Ken Wigham but it was never going to be easy for architect Ken Wigham to deliver all this on budget. And though they loved his initial design it was clear from the beginning that it would cost more than the agreed budget. But Sinead and Gavin had fallen hard for the design and were determined to make it a reality.
The size of the house had to be cut back and the budget increased but it still took the difficult decision of going the self-build route to get this project moving.
But as the house went up more corners had to be cut and sometimes it was hard for architect Ken to bite his tongue.
