Episode 2: Francis Brennan and architect Rory Murphy

For this project presenter Gary Miley matched celebrity hotelier Francis Brennan with Dublin architect Rory Murphy.
Francis wanted to build his ultimate retirement pad in the heart of the heritage town of Kenmare. However, he wasn't starting from scratch as he wanted to convert an old Victorian terrace into a contemporary townhouse.
Gary matched Francis with architect Rory Murphy who was known for sympathetic contemporary extensions to period houses.
Rory quickly interpreted Francis's aspirations with a stunning design for an upside-down house which would reinvent the existing house completely. Francis was adamant that the design could be built for his budget of €350,000. Rory though it might take more and hoped that more money might be made available for the interior finish and fit out.
Some design tweaks were made when Francis got cold feet about getting the design through planning. But the real headache came many months later when they were deemed in breach of their planning permission and the whole site was shut down. And there were more bombshells to come before this project was finished.
The design project featured in this programme along with the prior projects profiled in the programme were designed by Studio M Architects.
