Craft Master

Episode 2: Pottery

Practice: Ceramics
Location: North County Dublin
Mentor: Colm de Rís

Colm de Rís who has been featured on the US shopping Channel QVC on several occasions gave a master class in ceramics from his thriving pottery studio in North County Dublin. The three apprentices had to first identify a market and then decide on a product that would best suit their market. Colm gave the group guidance as they battled to control not only the potter's wheel but also the setbacks from lost pieces in the kiln. All three apprentices produced their end pieces with just about enough time to give a final glaze to their products.

Mentor: Colm de Rís
Colm de Rís works out of his studio on the north-side of Dublin. Colm and his team hand-throw and hand-build ceramics wear in strong colours, deep reds and blues with sweeping shapes and a neo-Celtic feel. They are fired in a gas-fired kiln in a heavy reduction flame and are dishwasher and microwave proof.

Guest Judge: Lisa Young
Lisa Young is a ceramics Lecture in NCAD and artist. Her work has been exhibited in Ireland, England, Scotland, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Italy and the USA. Some of Lisa's plaster murals for the Office of Public Works include:

  • Library and Herbarium, National Botanic Gardens
  • EU Food & Veterinary Offices, Grange, Co. Meath
  • State Laboratories, Celbridge, Co. Kildare

She uses a range of techniques to produce the work: hand building, model and mouldmaking, pressmoulding, slip and plaster casting.
