Programme 6: Go with the Flow

Micheal Mc Donnacha and Pat Folan are brothers-in-law who work full-time building and restoring Galway Hookers in their boatyard in Carraroe. Raised only yards from the Atlantic and in boats since they were three days old, they are currently restoring a Hooker that has been in Micheal's family for nearly 200 years. They get as much joy from building the boats as they do sailing them around Galway Bay and the Aran Islands.

On the other side of the country, and in a much tinier boat, Bernadette Fox enjoys sailing her dinghy out of Greystones Harbour as any adventurer on the high seas. No matter the conditions, whether freezing cold, high waves or low, windy or calm, Bernadette will not be prevented getting out on the Irish sea.

Lisa Hayden, a 20-year-old student, lives for rowing. A cox with the Garda Siochana rowing team, she spends most evenings and early week-end mornings out on the water in Blessington Lake. Even her boyfriend is a rower, part of Ireland's Olympic squad. Besides the beauty of the surroundings, part of 5' 2" Lisa's buzz is telling four 6' 4" guards what to do.

While they are all competitors in their different fields, it's the beauty and excitement of their experiences that makes them boat mad.
