Programme 7: The Lady and the Chocolate
Wednesday, 15th August 2007
It has been drunk, worshipped and fought over; turned into money, face paint and a disguise for poison, in fact what hasn't chocolate been used for. The majority of people have probably been buying the same brands for years. But what many don't realise is that chocolate is like music - there is an enormous range of pleasures out there. To these women, chocolate, it is a little treasure. How big is their habit, how many grams will they consume in a day? The Lady and the Chocolate will explore this all consuming passion, they will share their love for chocolate with us, their happy chocolate memories.
Hiding behind a delivery of books Johanna's face lights up, her eyes sparkle and she whispers, "it's time for chocolate". She heads over to her local chocolate boutique for her first fix of the day. A 70% dark chocolate cherry liquer is her favourite. "The explosion of taste is mezmorising - it blows me away everytime". A bookseller from Navan, Co Meath she has had an "almost religious" passion for chocolate since she was a child. "Growing up chocolate was precious. It was so difficult to find, from curly-wurly's to Crunchies, to dairy milks, I loved them all".
Bernice Glavin works as a nurse in the Mercy Hospital, Cork. She describes herself, first and foremost as a chocolate addict. This lack of discipline accounts for the lack of chocolate in Bernice's home - the fact is, she doesn't trust herself not to eat every brown crumb in the house. If she sees a wrapper on the footpath as she's out jogging, she smells the chocolate that not so long ago occupied it. Bernice's family and friends are only too aware of her passion; her Uncle once brought her 16 Cadbury's Cream Eggs, which she intended to share out at work but instead devoured them herself over two days. Bernice buys her chocolate anywhere and everywhere - the hospital, the swimming pool, a shop she passes, wherever. She takes regular walks to her local shop accompanied by her cocker spaniel. The dog adores chocolate Bernice doesn't just love chocolate; she is in love with chocolate.
The Lady and the Chocolate will bring us on a journey through their world that is consumed by their love of chocolate.
