About the Series

Behind Closed Doors

Behind Closed Doors

The business of Government is usually kept secret - politicians and civil servants argue that they need a confidential space so they can consider all options before reaching decisions.

But after being kept under lock and key for 30 years, the documents recording their discussions and debates are released, and transferred to the National Archives, where historians and researchers, as well as the general public, can see them.

For Behind Closed Doors, RTÉ has conducted extensive research on the documents held in the National Archives in Dublin, as well as the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland and the British National Archives in Kew, outside London.

Based on that research, and on interviews with some of the key participants in the period covered, the programme uncovers some of the secrets of Government - from Behind Closed Doors.
