About the House

Programme 4

This week, Duncan is in Rahan, Co Offaly to visit a couple who have just won a competition to upgrade their home. Aidan and Martina Grennan live in a cold draughty bungalow which was built 40 years ago.    Martina suffers from a debilitating illness fibromyalgia and also asthma  which is not helped by dampness, humidity and poor ventilation in their home
Now they have the chance to completely transform the comfort of their home by giving it the energy upgrade that it really needs. Duncan talks to them about their plans to improve their home and the difference it will make to their lives.
Martin English from NSAI talks to Duncan about the importance of using quality certified insulation products
Tania visits a small terraced home in Dublin 8 which has been completely transformed by the addition of a beautiful contemporary extension. Not only has this house been aesthetically changed, but an eco friendly rennovation has meant that it has gone from a G to a B1 BER rating.

A note on External Insulation
External Thermal Insulating Composite Systems (ETICS) involve the mechanical and/or adhesive fixing of insulation boards to the outside of a new or existing building, which are then covered with a mesh reinforcement, a base coat and a final decorative finish. This layered method encases the walls of the building and helps prevent heat from escaping unnecessarily from the property. Application of ETICS to a building can contribute to a good Building Energy Rating (BER), as well as improve the Airtightness of the property. For new build and retrofit situations, the elimination/minimising of ‘Cold Bridging’ at  window/doors, eaves, and at ground floor junctions can be incorporate into the design. Because the quality of installation and workmanship is critical to achieving the desired design life of the External Insulation System, NSAI has established and approval scheme for Installers, to evaluate and monitor their ongoing performance. By using NSAI Agrément Certified ETICS systems and Registered ETICS installers, the homeowner has the assured confidence that the system used is fit for purpose and that it has been installed by a reputable company whose capability has been independently assessed. From the 1st December 2009, only NSAI Agrément Registered Contractors installing NSAI Certified External Insulation Systems will be included on the Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) Home Energy Saving (HES) Scheme. A list of Agrément Certified External Thermal Insulating Composite Systems, the requirements of Registered Installers Scheme and the list of ETICS Registered Installers can be found on the NSAI website www.nsai.ie .
