About the House

Programme 9

Bunratty, Co. Clare

Duncan is in County Clare to visit one of Ireland’s best known landmarks. Built on the site of a Norman Castle, Bunratty castle is the largest Medieval Tower House in Ireland. It was the home for the O Briens Earls of Thomond the powerful clan in Munster until the 17th century.

Bunratty went through various owners until it was finally abandoned in the 1920s to become a picturesque ruin on the side of the Ennis road to Limerick until Shannon development had the vision to undertake its fine restoration in the 1950s. Duncan gets a tour around the castle and speaks to Dick Cronin, who has spent the last 30 years working on restoring Medieval Tower houses, like Bunratty.

Una McQuillan is in County Wicklow to visit a stunning house, tucked away in the mountains. This house which was originally built in 1982 has been extensively refurbished and extended by ABK architects, to create a spectacular, spacious family home.

Over the last few years since we started using wood pellet in Ireland, we have depended on imported pellets from various sources abroad and there were problems of consistency and large variations in cost. This week Duncan investigates how the industry has overcome it’s teething problems and at half the cost of oil and LPG and quarter the cost of heating from on peak electricity, wood pellet is now a very reliable and cost effective alternative to fossil fuels.
