About the House

Programme 4

Approximately eight years ago, Tom Murphy and Elaine Kennelley bought a small 60’s bungalow which needed a lot of work just to make it habitable. Now the two have had enough of living in a small cramped cold house and are building a large 2-story extension with loft space, which will be connected to the original bungalow by a glass corridor.

Tom and Elaine’s new extension will change their lives. Not only will their new extension add a huge amount of space to the existing house, but their new space will be a lot warmer too.

They have hired a German Company to build their turnkey house extension, for which they hope to get ‘passive House’ certification. If they are successful, this will be only the second house in Ireland to receive such certification. Not only that but having a passive house means that it will be very energy efficient and won’t require a conventional central heating system.

After five days on site, the German builders have the house erected and weather tight. The project is underway, but Tom and Elaine have some very different ideas about how to use the spaces inside!

This week, Una visits a spectacular dream home in Sutton, County Dublin - a house which is a combination of various styles of architecture with a glamourous interior, and has been built to maximize the stunning views of Howth Peninsula and Dublin bay.
