AJ Doyle - The Last Five DaysMonday 30 Sep 2013
All too often with debut albums the desire to release something triumphs over the material to justify it. So heart and ears are thankful to discover that Dubliner AJ Doyle has the songs; the big challenge ahead for him is deciding which to leave out.
At 16 tracks, this calling card has six more than Doyle needs, and that rookie earnestness lessens The Last Five Days' impact somewhat. Indeed, he could have taken the first 10 here and shown himself at his best - a voice able to handle the tender and harder-edged, Past the Point of Rescue-style drama alongside sunnier country, pop and folk arrangements.
Ruthlessness aside, Doyle has the smarts he needs to keep going for the next five years. If he kills a few more darlings he could be on the way to becoming one himself.
