Aimee Mann - Live at St Ann's WarehouseMonday 28 Feb 2005
Duration: 0 minutes
SuperEgo Records – 2004 – 147 minutes
Recorded at St Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York, this DVD/CD combines a live performance by Mann and her band with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. The 13-song CD features a shortened version of the live gig, with one additional song.
It's a retrospective of Mann's work, featuring tracks from all four of her solo albums: 'Whatever' (1993), 'I'm With Stupid' (1995), 'Bachelor No 2' (2000) and 2002's 'Lost in Space'. It also includes songs from the acclaimed 'Magnolia' soundtrack and two new songs: 'King of the Jailhouse' and 'Going Through the Motions'.
The concert itself sounds and looks great and manages to create a very intimate feel in what looks to be quite a large venue. Mann too is endearing in her awkward banter with the audience. Her almost brittle voice doesn't really lend itself well to singing live though, which is unfortunate because she sounds really good on the albums.
Fans might be perplexed at the lack of detail on the behind-the- scenes footage. Neither the interviews, nor the backstage film are very in-depth, which is disappointing, as it could have been much more interesting. The fact that the included CD is basically a shortened version of the concert is a missed opportunity on the part of the filmmakers to show more detailed and intimate backstage footage.
Fans certainly won't be disappointed with the live concert, but they might be annoyed at the lack of effort with the rest of the DVD.
