US record label magnate Suge Knight is in the intensive care unit of a California hospital after being shot six times at a pre-VMA party thrown by Chris Brown.

According to TMZ, witnesses reported hearing shots around 1:30am at the 10AK nightclub in West Hollywood, and Knight was subsequently taken by ambulance to a hospital and rushed into surgery. He's expected to make a full recovery.

Two other people were also shot; their conditions are unknown.

The party's host, Chris Brown, took to Twitter to lament the fact that the awards show was marred by violence.

"It's disappointing that we as a society can't have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes," the born-again pacifist tweeted. "Miss me with the bulls----!!!"

Around midnight, rapper The Game arrived at the event and was denied entry after getting into a fight with security guards, though members of his entourage went inside, TMZ added.

This isn't the first time Knight has been fired at before the VMAs. In 2005, he was shot and robbed at Kanye West's pre-party in Miami.
