Duke Special joins the RTÉ Concert Orchestra for a night of his own songs and interpretations of American singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson on Thursday 11 September, at the National Concert Hall.
Nilsson is best known for his massive singles Everybody’s Talkin’, Without You and Coconut. He was dubbed the ‘missing Beatle’ after John Lennon named him as his favourite American music act.
Harry Nilsson also wrote the song One, popularised by the American band Three Dog Night. The musician enjoyed cult status without ever performing big concerts or mega tours.
He received Grammy Awards for two of his recordings. He won Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, Male in 1970 for Everybody's Talkin, which featured in the Academy Award-winning movie Midnight Cowboy. He won Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male in 1973 for Without You.
Duke Special’s loving and sensitively-interpreted tribute to the US singer is well road-tested as Duke performed Nilsson nights in Derry, Belfast, Galway, Dublin, Cork, Portlaoise and Mullingar in October 2013.
