The living person milliner Philip Treacy most admires is “The Queen (of England), because she's kept hats alive in the imagination of people all over the world.”
Treacy’s hats are worn by royalty as well as Madonna and Lady Gaga, and the making of these presumably brought him great pleasure. However, Galway native Philip Treacy’s happiest memory is of “a beautiful day playing on what was known as a cock of hay (or haystack).”
Speaking to the Guardian today, he says his greatest fear is “apathy.” The trait he most deplores in himself is “the madness of creativity.”
His most embarrassing moment was when he was asked by Buckingham Palace to make a star for the Queen's Christmas tree.
‘’When I met her, she said, "But I thought you made hats?" I said, "I do, but today I've made you a star." I didn't know what else to say. “
