Cheers star Rhea Perlman has joined sitcom The Mindy Project.
The Emmy Award-winning actress, who played Carla Tortelli on the long-running show, has taken the recurring role of Danny's (Chris Messina) mother, reports TVLine.
The show's creator and lead actress, Mindy Kaling, recently spoke about the new character to the Television Critics' Association.
She said: "The wonderful thing about the character is the trope of the mother-in-law-type figure who doesn't like the girl is so pervasive, it's like, 'OK, how do we do a new spin on this?'"
She continued: "As Danny has said, 'I don't know how to please that woman'. So we haven't ignored her own relationship with her two sons [Danny and Richie] and her ex-husband. So we really explore a lot."
Perlman joins the comedy show for its third season, which is set to return to Fox this September.
