Colm Tóibín’s play, The Testament of Mary will be performed in Catalan at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 next.
The character of Mary, the mother of Jesus, will be played by Blanca Portilllo. In April 2013, the play opened on Broadway starring Fiona Shaw, and directed by Deborah Warner.
The production was nominated for a Tony Award for Best New Play and was released as an audio book with Meryl Streep, also in 2013. The Broadway production transferred to the Barbican in London in May.
Tóibín’s novel, Nora Webster, will be published by Penguin/Viking in October, and can be expected to top the book charts in this country, as did the author's penultimate novel, Brooklyn.
The movie adaptation of the latter novel - based on a Nick Hornby screenplay, and starring Saoirse Ronan - is currently in post-production.
Meanwhile, Tóibín is scheduled to give a talk on George Orwell, author of the Spanish Civil War account, Homage to Catolania, in Barcelona tonight.
