Madonna turned up for jury duty on Monday (July 7) in Manhattan, but was dismissed after less than two hours as enough jurors had already been selected.

"The greater good here is that her appearance really goes to show that everyone gets called,"  a spokesperson for the courts told reporters.

"The intent here was not to create a distraction to other jurors or the business of the court. She got credit for her service and we're delighted she came."

Inevitably, photographers surrounded the singer as she arrived at the courthouse, accompanied by two bodyguards and two female assistants. According to the New York Daily News, she was 30 minutes late for her 10.00am appointment.

The 55-year-old singer and actress was received in a clerk's office and did not sit in the waiting room on what was her second jury duty summons in six years.

She was previously called to court in 2008, and waited four hours to be excused at a Beverly Hills courthouse. This year's court appearance was originally scheduled for May, but Madonna submitted a doctor's note.

She is now exempt from jury duty until 2020.
