John Carney to cast unknowns in new Dublin film

Begin Again and Once director John Carney has said there will be lots of "new faces" in his new Dublin-set film Sing Street.

In an interview with Cominsoon.net, the Dublin filmmaker was asked whether he would cast unknowns in his film, which is set in 1980s Dublin and is a semi-autobiographical story about a teenager who forms a band.

He replied: "Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's exactly what we're doing. We're mixing it [casting] up but certainly the main people will be unknowns and it will star some great actors we're looking at for other roles, but it will be a film full of new faces."

Asked if it would be similar to his other films, Carney replied: "It's actually very different. It's all about kids, so it's very different in terms of it's not a grown-up movie."

He continued: "It's kind of like an adventure musical in a weird way, but it's set in the '80s in a school with a bunch of kids and then there are some teachers and parents.

"But it is, I suppose, connected to Once and Begin Again in that it is in how music shapes your decisions and informs and helps you make up your mind about things."

Begin Again opens in Irish cinemas on Friday July 11 – watch out for interviews with stars Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and James Corden on RTÉ TEN next week.
