Ben Kingsley has been added to the cast of Disney's upcoming live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book

The renowned actor will lend his voice to black panther Bagheera, alongside Idris Elba as the tiger Shere Khan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Elf) will direct the latest film version of author Rudyard Kipling's 1894 book. The script was written by Justin Marks.

The story will once again tell the tale of Mowgli, a young boy raised by Indian jungle animals, with a bear and a panther as friends, who spend their time avoiding a vicious tiger.

12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong'o and Scarlett Johansson have also been linked to the project, but have not been confirmed.

Favreau's new adaptation of the famous story will blend live action with CGI animals.

The Jungle Book is scheduled to hit cinemas in 3D on October 9, 2015.
