Ardal O'Hanlon has been cast in a new Sky1 comedy, After Hours.

The Father Ted star will appear alongside John Thomson in the six-part sitcom.

The show is set in a small town in Northern England and follows 18-year-old music fan Willow, played by newcomer James Tarpey, who has just suffered his first heartbreak.

O'Hanlon will play his father Peter, an unemployed former milkman.

The Fast Show's Thomson will play Peter's best friend Geoff, while Jaime Winstone will play Lauren, a radio host.

The series will be directed by The Royle Family's Craig Cash from a script by Molly Naylor and John Osborne.

Sky1's Head of Comedy, Lucy Lumsden, commented: "After Hours is a beautifully written series about growing up in a small Northern town which will capture the hearts of our Sky1 customers. We're delighted to be working with Craig Cash again."

Director Cash added: "John and Molly have created a world which is not only very funny but has genuine warmth at its heart. It's a pleasure to be working with such talented new writers and a cast of great comic actors."

After Hours will air on Sky1 in 2015.
