Karen Gillan has got the superhero bug and wants to star in the Spider-Man franchise – as Spider-Girl.

The former Doctor Who star’s striking red hair would make her a natural for the role of Mary-Jane Watson, who has been a central character in the comic book’s back story since her debut in 1964.

But speaking to SFX, the 26-year old said that she would like to "play a version of Spider-Man that's a lady" and that she would choose the name Spider-Girl over Spider-Woman.

After starring in the horror film Oculus, Gillan features as the alien super villain Nebula in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, which is due out in August.

Gillan will also be seen in Ti West's Western thriller In a Valley of Violence and will star in US TV network ABC's series Selfie, which is due in the autumn.
