Great news for cartoon fans – the Cartoon Network is to revive The Powerpuff Girls.

The cult animation show featured the exploits of Buttercup, Blossom and Bubbles, three girls who battled evil with super powers. Its original run aired 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005 and also spawned a 2002 movie.

A special TV movie - The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed - was broadcast in January this year, and featured revamped CGI animation and a guest appearance from Ringo Starr.

On the back of that, Cartoon Network's chief content officer Rob Sorcher has now confirmed that a full reboot series is in the works.

Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls has won two Emmys. As well as a feature film, its offshoots included comics and video games.
